Executive Interview of The NineHertz

Please introduce your company and give a brief about your role within the company?

GameFirms was established in early 2008, initiated by a team of highly creative and competent young professionals aimed at generating substantial business volumes through the power of Web and technology. Our primary objective is to deliver the needs of tomorrow today. We comprise a team of young, talented, highly qualified, and well-groomed engineers who are self-motivated and dedicated to providing quality, high-definition results to our clients. GameFirms is recognized as one of the most promising and rapidly growing Web and Mobile App Development Companies across India, founded on the principle of maximizing business with minimal resources. Our philosophy encourages an environment that fosters creativity, yielding profitable collaborations between our clients and us. My role within the organization involves ensuring a comprehensive understanding of client requirements. I participate in all initial project discussions to ensure our team has a clear understanding of deliverables. It is beneficial for both the team and the client that there is clarity in mutual understanding of the project. Therefore, I serve as a bridge between the client and the team through requirement analysis, feasibility studies, and suggesting appropriate technology stacks.

What was the idea behind starting this organization?

The overarching vision was to contribute towards a better tomorrow. There is an ever-increasing demand for mobile solutions, whether for individuals or companies. Mobile applications serve as a gateway to revenue growth and reaching target audiences for delivering products or services. GameFirms was founded with the ambition of becoming a one-stop shop for such business needs.

What is your company’s business model–in house team or third party vendors/ outsourcing?

We firmly adhere to an in-house team model, primarily because successful product delivery relies on consistent and efficient communication, both internally within the team and externally with the client. An in-house team maximizes internal communication, resulting in high client satisfaction, which may be compromised when relying on external vendors.

How is your business model beneficial from a value addition perspective to the clients compared to other companies' models?

Our business model, as previously outlined, focuses on maintaining an in-house team for all projects brought forth by our sales team. In addition to employing effective project management practices through specialized tools, the significant value addition lies in my personal involvement with each project. I strive to ensure that clients remain comfortable throughout the development process.

What industries do you generally cater to? Are your customers repetitive? If yes, what ratio of clients has been repetitive to you?

While there is no specific limitation on the industries we are willing to engage with or have previously served, I would highlight e-commerce, social networking, and messaging as our top three domains for recent successful achievements. Other industries include food ordering and restaurants, gaming (2D/3D), utilities, live streaming, and education. We do maintain partnerships with some offshore companies, who also outsource their workload. In terms of client retention, the ratio is approximately 60:40, with 60% focused on new client opportunities and 40% representing repeat business.

Mention the objectives or the parameters critical in determining the time frame of developing a mobile app.

The timeline for development is contingent upon several factors, including requirement documentation—ensuring that all requirements are clearly defined. Should further information be required, we request that the client provide necessary documentation. The second factor is the availability of wireframes; if a wireframe is already developed by the client, it significantly shortens the time to deliver initial application mock-ups. The third consideration is our experience with similar projects; a prior similar project allows us to leverage existing code, saving time and resources. Finally, technology preferences and the depth of analytics required play crucial roles in determining the timeframe, as we must adapt to current technological advancements, opting for NoSQL databases over traditional SQL to ensure seamless application performance.

How much effort in terms of time goes into developing the front end and back end of a mobile app?

It is challenging to distinctly categorize the time allotted for front-end versus back-end development, as it is highly dependent on the client's specific requirements. Sometimes, the front-end comprises a smaller segment compared to the extensive algorithms necessary for the back-end, which supports the front-end functionality. For instance, an application like Uber may feature a minimal number of front-end screens, yet its back-end complexity is considerable, maintaining a matrix for drivers and requests. Therefore, the time disparity between front-end and back-end development varies across projects.

What are the key parameters to be considered before selecting the right platform for a mobile application?

Several factors must be assessed prior to selecting the appropriate platform for mobile application development. First, the purpose of the application must be established; for internal use within a company, an Android application is preferred as it reduces costs since the company may provide devices. The second consideration is the target market; if the target audience is predominantly iOS users, the iOS platform should be prioritized. To maximize user outreach, we often recommend developing for both platforms simultaneously or sequentially.

Which platform do you suggest your clients to begin with when they approach you with an idea (Android or iOS) and why?

The decision regarding the platform is influenced by the aforementioned parameters, specifically the purpose of the app and the target market. These factors significantly contribute to the platform selection process.

Android or iOS, Native or Hybrid — which platform is best to use to build your app? What are your recommendations?

If user interface and superior app performance are not of paramount importance, and the application is intended for a limited user base for internal operations, we recommend a hybrid app. This approach saves time and reduces development costs, while still addressing the client's fundamental needs. Hybrid platforms offer simplified app maintenance. Conversely, if a client plans to launch their application globally, we advise utilizing a native platform, which excels in accessibility and overall visual appeal.

What are the key factors that you consider before deciding the cost of a mobile application?

The development cost of a mobile application is primarily dictated by the client's requirements. If the concept aligns closely with our previous accomplishments, costs are generally lower. Conversely, a unique concept that necessitates detailed planning, research, and effort will undoubtedly incur higher costs. The chosen platform also influences the time frame, which will ultimately impact the project's overall cost. Additional factors impacting cost include the device for which the application is being developed, such as phones, tablets, or iPads, and the necessity for third-party integrations, which streamline development yet may elevate overall costs.

What kind of payment structure do you follow to bill your clients? Is it Pay per Feature, Fixed Cost, Pay per Milestone?

We maintain a high degree of flexibility in our cost management strategies. However, the payment structure typically aligns with the app's status. For instance, if the app is merely a concept requiring development from the ground up, we prefer an hourly-based model. In this model, we implement a tracking system to monitor progress hourly and generate weekly invoices based on hours consumed. Alternatively, we offer a fixed-cost option, which provides clients with peace of mind, as they are not obligated to pay for hours of stagnation. In fixed-cost development, the total cost is divided into milestones, and invoices are generated upon the completion of each milestone, following internal and client testing. When the scope of work is defined, we recommend a fixed-cost model; when it is ambiguous, we opt for hourly payment plans.

Do you take in projects which meet your basic budget requirement? What is the minimum requirement?

We accept projects with a minimum duration of two weeks, totaling a budget of USD 1200.

What is the price range (min and max) of the projects that you catered to in 2016?

In 2016, we supported start-ups with project budgets ranging from a minimum of USD 1200 to over USD 210,000.

Which business model do you suggest to your clients enabling them to generate revenue from mobile applications? Why?

We encourage our clients to present their ideas and actively contribute suggestions to elevate their concepts. The revenue-generating models we generally recommend from an ROI perspective include Freemium, in-app advertising, and video advertising.
