Executive Interview of Cubix

Please introduce your company and give a brief about your role within the company?
This is Salman Lakhani, the founder and CEO of Cubix Inc, a multi-million dollar mobile app development company with unparalleled expertise in developing chart-topping mobile apps. The company leverages trending technologies such as Blockchain, AR, VR, IoT, and Augmented Reality in its app development processes. Over the past 11 years, the company has successfully developed software solutions for top brands like Walmart, Swatch Group, Sapient, Estee Lauder, Politico, Engro Corporation, and many more. Cubix’s headquarters is located in Washington DC, with a branch office in Dubai, UAE, and a production site in Karachi, Pakistan. My primary role involves maintaining cash flow, implementing strategies, enhancing the brand, participating in PMO meetings, and, most importantly, ensuring that we build solutions that create value for businesses and assist clients in leveraging innovative mobile and software strategies. Additionally, I prioritize cultivating an employee-friendly culture at Cubix.
What was the idea behind starting a digital product development company?
To be an entrepreneur, one must first identify problems and offer solutions. During my remote work with a US-based company in Karachi, Pakistan, where we developed digital products, I found myself dissatisfied with my paycheck compared to my peers working in local companies. This disparity highlighted a problem, and I anticipated that more western companies would seek remote resources due to various factors such as pricing, talent availability, office expenses, and insurance. My solution was to establish a service company targeting US-based clients, leveraging my experience and passion for the business. Thus, I founded Cubix Inc with a vision to provide superior software development services to the US market. Today, Cubix’s portfolio includes app and software solutions for small-scale industries, startups, blue-chip organizations, and Fortune 500 companies.
What is your company’s business model? Do you have an in-house team or do you prefer to outsource work to vendors?
Before responding to a query, our first step involves defining its scope and determining how to add distinctive value to the project. For startups, we proactively pitch innovative ideas from our creative team to enhance engagement, interactivity, and scalability. We translate basic concepts into functional products, addressing all necessary aspects such as competitive analysis, USPs, quality assurance, and feature management. Additionally, we provide consultancy to clients for better mobile app development, system integration, and software solutions. I firmly believe in the strength of an in-house team, which is why Cubix employs over 100 individuals globally who align with the company’s vision—encompassing engineers, DevOps, UX/UI, data science, project management, and content creation, all proficient in their respective domains.
What is the USP of Cubix and accordingly, what makes a client give you a project?
Our unique selling proposition lies in our proactive approach and the multitude of unique selling points we offer our clients. We conduct thorough research for product development, propose innovative ideas, and consult clients on how our concepts can give them a competitive advantage. Furthermore, Cubix adheres to global standards in software development, which has established our reputation for creating groundbreaking digital products. Our development process encompasses top-tier strategy, pristine UX/UI design, and robust development methodologies. Team Cubix consistently endeavors to elevate expectations by delivering solutions that exceed client goals.
What industries do you develop solutions for and how many of your clients keep coming back to you?
We strive to surpass client expectations by treating every product as our own. Our organizational structure includes product owners who provide valuable suggestions and insights. Our services extend across nearly every industry, particularly in the US market, including sectors such as technology, e-commerce, health and fitness, entertainment, cosmetics, wearables, marketplace, and food and drink. Cubix boasts extensive experience in developing apps and games, catering to renowned organizations like Tissot and Estee Lauder. I am a strong advocate for blockchain technology, having developed a distributed exchange for a client and aiming to create blockchain products utilizing our talented blockchain developers and architects. Notably, over 99% of our clients are repeat customers, reflecting our commitment to their growth as an indicator of our success.
How do you decide the timeframe of a project?
We conduct a thorough analysis of the project scope. Our PMP professionals prepare a work breakdown (WBD) that expands into a Level of Effort (LOE) document, defining the hours required for project completion, encompassing design, development, strategy, and delivery. This document includes the hourly rates for resource consumption, with the level of effort divided accordingly. However, timelines may be shortened if a client has completed preparatory work such as competitor analysis and product planning. This comprehensive approach determines our project timelines.
How much time and effort does it take to develop the back and front-end of a mobile app?
The duration of development depends on the app's features. An app with basic functionalities can typically be completed within two months, including design. Conversely, some applications may require a year for full readiness. To optimize the app development timeline, we encourage app owners to engage in smart resource planning in conjunction with a carefully monitored estimation process.
When it comes to choosing the right platform for an app, how does your team make that decision?
We primarily offer consultancy on selecting the appropriate platform for an app, conducted by our seasoned team of creative designers, developers, solution architects, and discovery specialists. I engage my team in discussions about their preferences before the development phase begins. The final decision is based on the target audience and the level of engagement necessary for achieving successful outcomes. While cross-platform applications require greater development effort, single platform apps must encompass all hardware and UX features, as the ultimate goal is to provide an engaging experience that delivers value to users.
Which platform is your preference to build an app for?
To ensure device compatibility and to leverage full functionality, selecting the right platform is essential. My personal preference is React Native for applications and Unity for games, both of which are current trends. Cubix is adept at developing superior apps for both iOS and Android platforms. However, the final decision is made after a thorough discussion of the feature list and market potential with the client. Regardless of platform choice, we have developed applications that generate ROI and guarantee long-term results.
How much does it cost to create a mobile app with Cubix?
The cost varies based on the length, features, and time committed to the project. Every element involved in the app development process is accounted for in the overall pricing, with each additional feature influencing the final cost.
What payment structure do you have at Cubix?
We establish the project cost and subsequently determine milestones. Fees are charged in advance for each milestone, which may be structured in phases, including versions and months.
What is the primary budget requirement of Cubix for a project?
Cubix's minimum budget requirement for a project is $30,000; however, we have successfully executed projects worth millions. Pricing also reflects the number of platforms involved. Each project is analyzed and evaluated based on metrics and resource allocation.
What is the minimum and maximum price range of the projects that Cubix catered to in 2018?
The year 2018 concluded successfully for us, with projects valued between $40,000 and $1 million. Additionally, we participated in Gitex 2018, making strong connections and generating a robust pipeline of prospects.
Android or iOS, Native or Hybrid - which platform is best to use to build your app? What is your recommendation?
The best choice largely depends on the app type and its target audience. For instance, I would recommend a Hybrid platform for a social media app, while a Native platform would be ideal for applications requiring hardware integration and enhanced functionalities. The choice between iOS and Android hinges on the user base; for an app intended for distribution in the USA, I would opt for iOS, whereas for global reach, Android offers significant advantages due to its larger market share.
Which business model do you suggest to your clients enabling them to generate revenue from mobile applications and why?
I typically recommend the freemium model to clients, where users can download the app at no initial cost and pay for additional features should they find the app valuable. The trial model follows close behind, allowing users to test the app and charging after a specified period. Niche apps, like CRM tools, require a distinct approach, as charging upfront is often challenging due to the prevalence of free alternatives despite heavy investment. Other examples of such apps include PUBG, Fortnite, and Canva.
